Overpainting
Exhibition: Altered Realities
Artist: David Foxcroft and Kristine Zingeler
Overview
Kristine Zingeler uses diverse methods and materials in her art practice, from oil paint to photography and collage. She seamlessly works between these mediums to create surfaces for narratives to be explored. Her use of found photographs introduces narrative through imagery. These narratives are then altered through specialized collage techniques and new narratives are formed. If we remove certain parts of an image, it changes how we view the image and offers a whole new perspective or story. Participants will explore this technique by taking an image and selectively overpainting portions of the image to alter its story.
Objectives
Combine two different mediums
Examine narratives within imagery
Alter an image to offer alternative views of story telling
Materials
Old magazines or discarded books
Glue
Cardstock
Paint brushes - various sizes
Acrylic paint
Scissors
Instructions:
Step One
Select a found image from a magazine or discarded book. The image should both tell a story and hold personal interest to you. Carefully remove the image from the publication, trim any ripped edges with scissors and glue on to Cardstock.
Step Two
Carefully examine the image you selected and find its points of narrative. What are the subjects and or elements included that help tell the story? If you alter one of the elements, how will it change how the image is perceived?
Step Three
Once you have decided what part of the image you would like to alter, use acrylic paint to reduce or add to part of the image. You may choose an abstract method to alter your image or perhaps be more representational.
